The first Svensk Hyllningsfest was held in October 1941, to honor the Swedish pioneers who settled in the Smoky Valley in 1868-69.

Lindsborg's Svensk Hyllningsfest is a biennial tribute to the Swedish pioneers occurring in October of odd numbered years. The festival features art, crafts, special foods, ethnic music, folk dancing, parade, smörgåsbord, and special entertainment. The festival coincides with the Bethany College homecoming. Many of Lindsborg's residents don traditional Swedish folk costumes for the event. Swedish folk dance groups and musicians add to the Swedish flavor of the festival.

At festival time the Lindsborg community enjoys a "togetherness" as everyone participates in some aspect of the celebration. Newcomers have as much fun "becoming Swedish" as do the long time residents. This community closeness may be the highest tribute we can pay to the immigrants who also exemplified this kind of unity - a fitting legacy for future residents of the Smoky Valley.

Friday night Swedish smörgåsbord... A Svensk Hyllningsfest Friday Night tradition! Authentic Swedish cuisine served buffet style including all of your favorite Swedish delicacies. Limited to 1,200 diners.

On Saturday evening, enjoy our headline entertainment.  The performance begins at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night in Presser Hall Auditorium.

Folk dancing and folk music lend a unique character and spirit to Svensk Hyllningsfest. The Dancers - from eager young grade school students who have been practicing for months to the Lindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers (high school age students) and the Lindsborg Folkdanslag (their adult counterparts) - are charming and enthusiastic performers.  The festival also features live demonstrations of cooking, arts, crafts, and folk costumes among others.  The parade, featuring area marching bands, floats, antique cars, and other parade entries is a key attraction.

Festival support buttons are available for $5. These admit you to all festival events except for the Smörgåsbord and the Saturday evening entertainment.

Join our ALLSPEL at Svensk Hyllningsfest!

There will be an opportunity to participate in our ALLSPEL again at Svensk Hyllningsfest in October. For the ALLSPEL we encourage all musicians, fiddlers and players of other instruments, alumni-fiddlers and future fiddlers, guests as well as Lindsborg-musicians, senior citizens as well as students. This will be the second ALLSPEL, and we need you!  Visit our ALLSPEL page.

The Svensk Hyllningsfest Committee is currently seeking Scandinavian or Scandinavian-American artists, artisans, craftsmen, and entertainers (humorists, folklorists, dancers, musicians, storytellers, etc.) for participation in the festival.   Spaces are available in the arts and crafts tents for sales or demonstrations and time slots are currently available at various venues throughout the three day festival.   Please contact the Svensk Hyllningsfest Committee with your thoughts or suggestions.
