Join our ALLSPEL at Svensk Hyllningsfest!

There will be an opportunity to participate in our ALLSPEL again at Svensk Hyllningsfest in October. For the ALLSPEL we encourage all musicians, fiddlers and players of other instruments, alumni-fiddlers and future fiddlers, guests as well as Lindsborg-musicians, senior citizens as well as students. This will be the second ALLSPEL, and we need you!

Allspel at Svensk Hyllningsfest

The idea for fiddlers and musicians to have a common repertoire was born in Scandinavia with the first fiddling contests in the early 1900s. The tunes selected as ALLSPEL tunes would build a basic common repertoire, which fiddlers always could choose from when meeting musicians from other areas. In 1906 there was a fiddling contest in Nyland (Finland) and the Finnish-Swedish music researcher Otto Andersson often is said to be the first one to arrange an ALLSPEL. After the contest was over he would gather all the fiddlers on the stage and asked them to play some tunes together. Over the years most Swedish folkmusic festivals, and some Swedish-American events, include an ALLSPEL. Many regional folkmusic organizations publish lists of ALLSPEL tunes, sometimes there are annual lists.

ALLSPEL is literally translated as ALL PLAY or EVERYONE PLAYS, and that is exactly what it is about. We’d like to invite everyone with an instrument to join in our ALLSPEL. It doesn’t have to be a violin, it doesn’t even have to be a string instrument! It is a performance open to all musicians present.

If you have never played Swedish folkmusic with Swedish folkmusicians before, you may wonder why they don’t always play the music exactly as written. That is just the way with folkmusic, which often is taught or learned by ear. Printed scores are not always identical to how tunes are performed. There may also be differences depending on if the musicians are used to playing to dance, or mainly play for audiences who sit and listen. This is one of the fascinating things with folkmusic.

If this is your first ALLSPEL, keep an open mind and let yourself enjoy being part of something big. If you have participated in many ALLSPEL events, please remember that this will be our second in Lindsborg! We encourage you to memorize the tunes, but if you’d like to be part of this event and need sheet music, bring your own music and music stand. When printing off music, make sure you open the PDF-file and print it. (Brudlåt från Öje Kapell has two pages!)
